One person flies to Phuket for ten days for the sea. Another wants to spend the winter here. A third is coming to look at apartments and choose an area to move to. The right dates for them may well be different.

If swimming and beach time are the priority, start planning from November to April. If you are coming for a long stay, everyday life in the area matters more. And when buying property, it helps to see how a building and its surroundings change in different weather.

Here is how to choose when to visit Phuket for your own goal.

November to April: the main window for beach holidays

On the Andaman coast, which includes Phuket, November to April is considered the most suitable period for a beach trip. There is usually less rain and a calmer sea. Thailand's official tourism portal uses the same seasonal reference.

If this is your first short holiday and you want to spend most of it by the water, we recommend starting your date search with this period.

At the same time, November and April should be treated as the edges of the season. The weather changes gradually, so a calendar date alone does not guarantee sunshine and flat water.

For a short trip it helps to decide the priority in advance: a beach near your accommodation, tours, family time or getting to know the island. That makes it easier to choose an area and avoid spending a large part of your holiday on transfers.

May to October: a trip with more flexible plans

May to October is the main rainy period in Phuket. The west coast is affected by the southwest monsoon, which brings rain and rougher seas.

This does not mean the whole holiday has to be spent indoors. But it is better to plan so that activities can change with the weather.

For a rainy day, consider a spa, a cooking class, the aquarium, cinema, a workout or a slow lunch. Boat trips are easier to book when they can be rescheduled.

If your main goal is to swim daily in calm water, this period demands more flexibility. On the beach, follow the flags and lifeguards' instructions: sunny weather alone does not mean swimming is safe. Thailand's tourism authority separately warns about waves and storms during the monsoon season.

When to come for a winter stay

The whole length of stay matters for wintering. Over several months you will be able to assess far more than the beach and the pool.

Before choosing an apartment, picture an ordinary week: where you shop for groceries, exercise, work and spend your evenings. If you are coming with a child, add school and after-school activities.

We recommend first living in the area of interest as a normal resident. Visit the nearest shop, drive your daily routes, work from the apartment and spend a weekend at home.

After a couple of weeks it becomes clearer what you actually need: the sea on foot, a quiet bedroom, a practical kitchen, a desk, or a quick exit from the area.

If you plan to stay until the season changes, choose a home that is comfortable to spend time in when beach plans have to be postponed.

When to visit Phuket to choose property

You can come for viewings at any time of year. The timing depends on what exactly you want to assess.

During the beach season it is convenient to get to know the coastline, check walking routes to the sea and see whether you like the atmosphere of the area.

After rain it is useful to look at the driveway, parking, entrance area and walkways between buildings. In a finished apartment you can assess the condition of the windows and balcony and look for signs of leaks.

If you can, get to know the location in different seasons. This is especially useful when buying a home for permanent residence.

For an under-construction project we look separately at the documents, layouts, timelines and future infrastructure. A showroom visit adds to that work but does not answer every question about the purchase.

Which complex works in any weather

During a sunny viewing, attention often goes to the pool and the view from the terrace. For a long stay, a few more questions are worth asking.

Is there an indoor gym? Where can you work if home is noisy? What is there for a child to do? Is it easy to get from the parking to the apartment during heavy rain?

The layout of the home itself also matters. Is there enough space to relax together, cook and store things? Would you want to spend a whole day here?

A well-chosen apartment stays comfortable when the weather changes your plans.

There is no universal month for everyone. The right time depends on how you want to spend the trip and what you want to learn about the island.
